Finding the Best Shovel For You

Rob Thibault

With a forecast for an unusually wet and cool winter in effect, our team at TBO’s Snow & Ice Management thought that we would put together a guide to assist you in buying the perfect shovel to help with those late night and early morning snow clearing sessions!

First thing’s first. According to this Consumer Report, there are 3 important things to take into account when purchasing the perfect snow clearing shovel:

  1. Handle → Does the handle on the shovel you are considering purchasing lend itself to optimum usability as you shovel at difficult angle and toss snow as far from your sidewalk as possible?

  2. Grip → If you’re really going to “put your back into it”, make sure the handle you are using isn’t is easy to grip and not too ha on your hands. Is it a good fit for the size of your palm? You don’t want to be getting blisters on the regular!

  3. Scoop → If you live in an area where snowfall isn’t significant, don’t go for a shovel that has too deep of a bucket - snow will get stuck! That being said, if you are attempting to move large amounts of snow, a shovel with a shallow scoop will only make your task more challenging.

There are also several other factors that are important to take into account when purchasing the perfect shovel. Ask yourself, “Is my shovel too low or high for me?” It is also important to take into account the width of the shovel - the deeper the snow bank that needs to be moved, the narrower your shovel should be.

Not interested in clearing your driveway at all. No problem! Call TBO’s Snow & Ice Management team; we’ll be there in a flash!
